Dual Diagnosis Treatment
At Teen Treatment Center, we realize your teenager comes to us with a unique background and needs. We find that many of our patients need treatment for dual diagnosis disorder.
What is dual diagnosis disorder exactly? When an individual has a mental illness and abuses drugs and alcohol this is referred to as “dual diagnosis disorder” or a “co-occurring disorder.” Dual diagnosis is common among adolescents. In fact, studies have shown that over 50 percent of teenagers that have a substance use disorder also have a psychiatric illness.
Substance abuse often co-occurs with the following mental illnesses:
The child psychiatrists and child psychologists at the Teen Treatment Center have successfully treated many patients that have co-occurring disorders. Under the guidance of our treatment team, your teenager can recover too.

Why Teen Dual Diagnosis Treatment is Important
Did my child’s substance abuse disorder occur first or did their mental illness? Often, mental health professionals may have a difficult time determining which condition occurred first because their symptoms often mimic each other. An untreated mental illness can lead to adolescents self-medicating with alcohol, illegal drugs and prescription medications. On the other hand, some drugs can cause psychiatric issues.
If your teenager has a dual diagnosis disorder, it is imperative to treat both illnesses simultaneously. Substance abuse and psychiatric illnesses can exacerbate each other, making it difficult for the adolescent to fully recover.
Treatment for Dual Diagnosis
Our teen dual diagnosis treatment program is an intensive residential program that will allow your child to improve their mental health and become drug and alcohol free. Individual and group therapy, family therapy, life skills training and recreational therapy are some of the services included in the treatment program. We utilize both Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Your teenager’s treatment plan will be tailored to their specific needs. In addition, all of your teenager’s individual therapy sessions will be conducted with the same psychologist.
