Family Therapy Program
We realize your teen’s substance abuse may leave you feeling hopeless about their future and the overall function of your family. You are doing the best you can, yet nothing seems to help your teenager. Our family therapists will provide you with support and guidance during this turbulent time. We understand that making the decision to send your son or daughter to treatment has been filled with so much emotion. Your son or daughter deserves the best treatment out there, and you have found it.
Family involvement increases your teen’s chances at recovery, and that is why we expect all of our patients and their loved ones to participate in the program. Throughout your teen’s stay, you will meet with your family therapist both individually and as a family. To accommodate our patient’s and their family’s needs, we are available to hold therapy sessions via telephone or video conference.

The Importance of Family Therapy
Whenever a teenager is struggling with substance abuse, mental health or behavioral issues, it causes a ripple effect throughout the entire family. As a result, the dynamics in the family change, often leading to turmoil. Due to the interconnected relationships within the family, it is crucial for the family to be involved in the teen’s treatment. Our family therapy program is designed to help improve your family dynamic.
At Teen Treatment Center, we create individual treatment plans not only for the teens, but for their families as well. Our family therapists will tailor your family’s treatment plan based on your unique circumstances and needs. Some of the goals of the program include:
- Educating you on your teen’s condition (e.g. substance use disorder, depression, anxiety)
- Improving your family’s communication skills
- Teaching you how to identify conflicts and resolve them
- Providing you with the skills to promote and support positive behaviors in your teen and reduce negative interactions
- Rebuilding and strengthening your emotional connection
The healing process doesn’t end once your child leaves a residential program. It is important for your teen and your family members to continue working on your struggles post-treatment. Our treatment team will create a thorough aftercare plan for your teen; the aftercare plan will help your teen transition back to their life at home. The plan may also include resources for continued help such as support groups and individual therapy.
Aspects of Our Family Therapy Program
Your family therapist will walk alongside you in the early minutes and days following your teen’s admission to treatment. We are here to assist in the healing process through providing you new tools and skills to improve your communication, emotional connection and well-being as a family.
Family Therapy Sessions
At Teen Treatment Center, each family is assigned a designated family therapist. This family therapist holds sessions individually with the parents/guardians, individually with the patients and together as a family. Families can expect to meet with the family therapist at least once per week, and more if necessary. The goal of these sessions is to promote a healthy family dynamic and prepare both the teenager and parents for when they return home.
Family Support Groups
The bi-weekly family support group meetings are a time for parents to come together with one of our family therapists and discuss their common struggles. Every month, one of the meetings will have a specific topic that is relevant to what the parents are going through. Past topics have included rebuilding trust with your teen and learning your teen’s love language. The other meeting each month is a general session where parents can come with questions or concerns they’d like to discuss with the group. These meetings are held virtually so that families all over the country are able to attend.
Family Therapy Workshops
Each family is encouraged to attend one of our family therapy workshops once their teen enters our treatment program. During these workshops, parents will learn more about our programs, what their teen will be learning while in treatment, be educated on substance use and relevant topics, and learn skills to reinforce effective communication and behavior change.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Training for Parents
DBT is one of the evidence-based treatment methods used at Teen Treatment Center. Our family therapists hold training sessions for parents so that once their teen returns home, they will be able to reinforce the skills learned by the teen during treatment. These sessions are held both face-to-face and virtually to accommodate our parents needs.
Teen Group Therapy Sessions
While your teen is in our care, they will attend a variety of group therapy sessions with their peers. One of these groups is held by a family therapist and specifically addresses the family dynamic. During these sessions, your teen will be able to gain valuable perspective from their peers.
